Field of Dreams

Ivan Morison and Heather Peak

Mereside Meadow

This year (2026), we have been working with artists Ivan Morison and Heather Peak on a long-term project in Mereside – starting with the planting of a wildflower meadow.

The Field of Dreams explores processes of growing, gathering, and collective making, bringing together ideas of ecology, civic space, and material transformation. The meadow itself is both site and medium, supporting biodiversity and soil regeneration, while also producing materials that will later be harvested and shaped into structures built with the community.

“This is a social artwork… It treats the act of growing as part of the artwork itself. The process is public, slow, and visible.” – Ivan Morison

As summer softens into autumn, the field will be harvested at a scything festival, where Ivan will transform the crop into 3 metre tall field creatures, who will overwinter in the meadow until springtime.

These creatures will become a part of our 2026 Lightpool event, taking place in the meadow this October.

Welcoming Winter

This summer, LeftCoast has been working with international artists Heather Peak and Ivan Morison to transform a seven-acre piece of disused land in Mereside into the Field of Dreams – a wildflower meadow growing biodiversity, art materials and new possibilities.

Now, as the seasons turn, the field is preparing for the next stage of its transformation. On Friday 23 October, LeftCoast will bring the Field of Dreams to life after dark for Welcoming Winter, as part of Lightpool’s 10-year anniversary celebrations.

From 6.30pm, artists AndNow, whose work has featured at the Blenheim Palace, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, and the National Eisteddfod of Wales, will fill the meadow with unexpected uses of light, creating an immersive evening of gathering, celebration and seasonal spectacle.

Emerging from the darkness will be a family of extraordinary three-metre-tall field creatures, created by Ivan Morison from hay harvested from the meadow. Made from the land itself, the creatures will overwinter in the field, slowly returning their nourishment to the soil and acting as guardians of the land.

Welcoming Winter takes place from 6.30pm on Friday 23 October at the Field of Dreams in Mereside.

The event is free and everyone is welcome.
