Lightpool Festival

Lightpool is one of LeftCoast’s legacy projects, run in partnership with Visit Blackpool, Blackpool Illuminations, Lightworks, and the Grundy Art Gallery. It is one of the Arts Council’s new National Portfolio Organisations, secured in the 2023-26 Investment Round.

Starting in 2016, it has taken on a whole life of its own, helping to transform the illuminations and extend their reach into the town centre.

Each year, thousands of spectators come out to see the award winning light festival featuring international installations from the likes of Australia, France, the Netherlands and Spain.

A daily performance of home

In October 2023, LeftCoast commissioned architectural designer Ecaterina Stefanescu and film company Huckleberry Films to co-create an artistic response to Sarah Butler’s essay, A daily performance of home.

The light and film installation explored LeftCoast’s artist residencies, which took place between 2018 and 2021, one in Fleetwood, and the other in Hawes Side.

It looked at the magic and poetry found in our everyday rituals, and how we can seek wisdom from the ordinary, the “bits in between”.

Over 1,600 people visited the installation, which was available to view as part of the Lightpool art trail from October 20th to October 29th.

The film will shortly be available to watch online.
